Zoho Invoice vs Stripe
Stripe Invoicing charges for paid one-time invoices on top of payment processing. Zoho Invoice does not, but its free plan has limits. Here is when using both makes sense.

The Short Answer
If you send a one-time invoice using Stripe Invoicing and the customer pays through Stripe, you generally pay two separate fees: an Invoicing fee of 0.4% on Starter or 0.5% on Plus, and Stripe's applicable payment-processing fee.
Zoho Invoice charges neither a subscription fee nor an additional invoicing percentage. You can generate the invoice in Zoho and use Stripe as its payment gateway. That keeps Stripe processing the payment while avoiding the separate Stripe Invoicing fee.
On a $1,000 invoice paid with an eligible U.S. domestic card, that is approximately $33.30 through Stripe Invoicing Starter versus $29.30 through Zoho Invoice and Stripe. The $4 difference comes from the invoicing layer, not the card-processing rate.
The catch: Zoho Invoice is limited to 500 invoices per year, two users, and three projects. For businesses within those limits, Zoho Invoice plus Stripe can be an economical arrangement. Above them, compare paid Zoho Books or Zoho Billing options against staying with Stripe Invoicing before deciding.
What a Stripe Invoice Actually Costs
Stripe Invoicing is not the same as Stripe Payments. Its percentage-based fee applies to eligible one-time invoices paid through Stripe Invoicing. Card or bank-payment processing is a separate charge. A draft or unpaid invoice does not incur the standard paid-invoice percentage solely because you sent it.
| $1,000 invoice | Processing | Invoicing fee | Total | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe Invoicing Starter, domestic card | $29.30 | $4.00 | $33.30 | 3.33% |
| Stripe Invoicing Plus, domestic card | $29.30 | $5.00 | $34.30 | 3.43% |
| Zoho Invoice via Stripe, domestic card | $29.30 | $0 | $29.30 | 2.93% |
| Stripe Invoicing Starter, ACH Direct Debit | $5.00 | $4.00 | $9.00 | 0.90% |
| Zoho Invoice via Stripe, ACH Direct Debit | $5.00 | $0 | $5.00 | 0.50% |
Illustrative standard U.S. fees for successful eligible payments: domestic cards at 2.9% + $0.30; ACH Direct Debit with standard settlement at 0.8%, capped at $5. Stripe Invoicing Starter adds 0.4% and Plus adds 0.5% per paid one-time invoice. Other card types, international payments, currency conversion, expedited ACH, account verification, tax products, or negotiated terms may change the total. Annual invoice value is not annual invoice count. If your business collects $500,000 from 100 eligible one-time Stripe Invoicing Starter invoices, its 0.4% invoice fee is approximately $2,000, separate from processing. Generating those invoices in free Zoho Invoice could eliminate that fee. But $500,000 split across 1,000 invoices would exceed Zoho Invoice's 500-invoice annual limit. In that case, compare the cost of a paid Zoho product with Stripe Invoicing instead of assuming $2,000 in net savings. Run your numbers.
Zoho Invoice Is Free, Within Limits
Zoho Invoice's U.S. edition has no software subscription, no percentage-based invoice fee, and includes quotes, recurring invoices, expenses, time tracking, payment reminders, and a customer portal. However, the free product is designed for smaller operations.
| Zoho Invoice allowance | Published U.S. free-plan limit |
|---|---|
| Subscription and invoicing software | $0 |
| Invoices | 500 per year |
| Users | 2 |
| Projects | 3 |
| Organizations | Up to 2 |
| Branding | Includes “Powered by Zoho Invoice” |
| Payment processing | Gateway fees still apply |
Limits confirmed on Zoho Invoice's U.S. pricing page. Invoice allowances reset on the organization's annual usage cycle; verify remaining capacity in the product's usage statistics. Free invoicing is not unlimited invoicing.
Where Stripe Genuinely Wins
We are a Zoho partner, so weigh this section accordingly. Stripe Invoicing charges for the convenience of a tightly integrated invoicing and payments workflow, and that convenience can be worth paying for.
Everything in one payment dashboard
Native Stripe Invoicing brings invoices, payment collection, customer payment details, reporting, and payment reconciliation into Stripe. Its hosted invoice pages and customer portal are built around the Stripe environment. Adding Zoho introduces another application to configure and support.
Developer-first invoicing
For software companies generating invoices programmatically, Stripe's invoicing APIs fit naturally with its broader payments infrastructure. Adding an external invoicing platform may not be worth the integration and maintenance effort.
Automated collections, quotes, and reconciliation
Stripe Invoicing includes hosted invoice pages, payment reminders, automatic collection tools, and invoice reporting. Stripe Invoicing Plus adds quotes. It is more than a payment button with a PDF attached, so compare the actual workflow before assuming another tool is equivalent.
Subscriptions and tax tools
Stripe Billing handles recurring subscriptions under a separate pricing model. Stripe Tax can automate tax calculation for supported transactions, but may carry its own fees. Neither product should be treated as included in the basic 0.4% Stripe Invoicing calculation.
Where Zoho Invoice Wins
No separate invoicing percentage
Inside the free plan's limits, Zoho does not take an additional percentage merely for issuing an invoice. Connect Stripe as the payment gateway and you pay Stripe's applicable processing charges without using Stripe's separate Invoicing layer.
Service-business workflows
Quotes, expense and mileage tracking, project time, recurring invoices, automated reminders, and a customer portal are available within Zoho Invoice's limits. For a consultant or small service team that invoices work rather than generates bills from an application, these workflows can make Zoho Invoice a better fit.
Choice of payment gateways
Zoho Invoice supports Stripe and other gateways, subject to region and payment-method availability. This provides options if your payment needs change, although switching gateways may involve customer payment credentials, settlement settings, and additional configuration.
Zoho CRM integration and a growth path
Zoho Invoice can integrate with Zoho CRM through configured synchronization. The features available depend on your CRM edition and setup. As requirements grow, Zoho provides upgrade options: Zoho Books for broader accounting and Zoho Billing for more advanced billing, higher invoice volumes, and subscription management. Zoho also documents an in-product upgrade path from Invoice to Books.
How to Use Both Together
For eligible smaller businesses, issuing invoices through Zoho while Stripe processes the payment can reduce invoicing fees without abandoning Stripe. The customer-facing invoice and payment flow will be Zoho's, however, rather than an identical Stripe Invoicing page.
- Connect your Stripe account in Zoho Invoice Go to Zoho Invoice's online payment settings, connect Stripe, and enable it on the invoices you intend customers to pay online. Confirm supported countries and payment methods for your account.
- Test one invoice from end to end Send a test invoice, review the customer payment page, confirm payment status updates, and reconcile the Stripe settlement and fees before moving active invoicing volume.
- Set an authoritative customer-data workflow Decide where customers, contacts, and invoice details originate. If using Zoho CRM, configure and validate synchronization rather than assuming records are shared automatically.
- Offer ACH Direct Debit if appropriate For U.S. customers, Stripe's standard ACH Direct Debit rate is 0.8%, capped at $5 per transaction. On a $4,000 invoice, that is $5 compared with approximately $116.30 for an eligible domestic card. ACH may require customer bank verification, and faster settlement or instant verification can add fees.
- Count invoices before migrating Review your previous 12 months of invoices and your projected growth. If the total may exceed 500 per year, price Zoho Billing or Zoho Books before moving invoicing workflows.
- Assess subscriptions separately Zoho Invoice can send recurring invoices, but it is not equivalent to the full Stripe Billing subscription stack. For sophisticated recurring billing, compare Stripe Billing with Zoho Billing and include tax and payment-processing costs.
Do Not Confuse Stripe's Three Invoice Scenarios
| Stripe workflow | What to budget |
|---|---|
| One-time invoice in Stripe Invoicing | 0.4% Starter or 0.5% Plus per paid invoice, plus processing |
| Recurring subscriptions via Stripe Billing | Separate Stripe Billing pricing, plus applicable payments or other fees |
| Post-payment invoice from Checkout or Payment Links | 0.4% capped at $2 for eligible one-time purchases, separate from Payments fees |
The $2 cap is for post-payment invoices generated through Checkout or Payment Links; it is not a cap on standard Stripe Invoicing. Sources: Stripe Invoicing and Stripe pricing.
So, Which Should You Pick?
Use Zoho Invoice with Stripe if
- You send 500 invoices or fewer per year
- You need no more than two users and three projects
- You want estimates, time tracking, expenses, and a customer portal
- You can use Zoho for invoices while keeping Stripe for payments
- You want to avoid an additional 0.4% or 0.5% invoice charge
Keep Stripe Invoicing if
- Your invoicing is generated mainly by your application's API
- You want invoicing and payments in the same dashboard
- You need Stripe's native collection, quoting, or reporting workflows
- The costs of supporting a second system outweigh the potential fee savings
- You invoice beyond Zoho Invoice's free limits and are not considering a paid Zoho product
There is a third option. If your business outgrows 500 annual invoices, two users, or three projects but still wants Stripe as its payment processor, compare Zoho Billing + Stripe for advanced billing and subscriptions, or Zoho Books + Stripe for full accounting and invoicing. Those products have their own plan limits and subscription costs, so recalculate the total instead of assuming they deliver the same savings as free Zoho Invoice.
Common Questions
How much does Stripe Invoicing cost?
Stripe Invoicing Starter is 0.4% per paid one-time invoice, and Plus is 0.5%. Payment processing is extra. A $1,000 Starter invoice paid with an eligible domestic card costs approximately $33.30 in combined fees at standard U.S. rates.
Is Zoho Invoice really free?
Yes, with no subscription or additional invoicing percentage, but it allows only 500 invoices a year, two users, and three projects. Payment-processing fees still apply, and the software includes “Powered by Zoho Invoice” branding.
Can I use Zoho Invoice with Stripe?
Yes. Zoho can issue the invoice and Stripe can process the payment. You avoid Stripe's separate Invoicing percentage, but the Zoho invoice email and customer payment journey may differ from Stripe's native invoice experience.
What if I need more than 500 invoices per year?
Evaluate Zoho Billing or Zoho Books, or continue with Stripe Invoicing. Compare their subscription costs, usage limits, feature requirements, and payment processing before switching.
Does Stripe still include 25 free invoices per month?
No. That legacy allowance ended in November 2023. Current one-time Stripe Invoicing fees are 0.4% on Starter and 0.5% on Plus per paid invoice.
