Zoho Billing vs Chargebee

Flat subscription pricing versus invoicing-volume fees. The crossover depends on billing frequency, and the comparison changes again at enterprise scale.

Updated October 21, 2026 · 7 min read · Zenatta Consulting, Zoho Premium Partner

The Short Answer

Zoho Billing Premium costs $79 per month when billed annually, or $100 if billed month to month. Chargebee Flow takes a different approach: $0 plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99 plus 0.65%. The cheaper Chargebee rate depends on how much you invoice.

At $10,000 in monthly invoicing volume, Chargebee Flow's pay-as-you-go price is $80. That is almost identical to Zoho Premium's $79 annual-billing equivalent, but less than its $100 month-to-month price. At $50,000 in volume, Chargebee Flow is $400 versus Zoho Premium at $79 annually billed or $100 billed monthly, before other charges.

Zoho Premium has a $1 million annual billed-amount limit and up to 100,000 invoices per year. That is a limit on its published plans, not a ceiling on Zoho Billing itself: Enterprise has custom pricing and no published annual billed-amount cap. Both companies also offer CPQ and revenue recognition capabilities, but scope and commercial terms vary by product and edition.

US list pricing checked October 21, 2026. Zoho's $39 and $79 prices are monthly equivalents with annual billing; month-to-month prices are $50 and $100. Chargebee Flow's percentage is based on monthly invoicing volume, not necessarily cash collected. Sources: Zoho Billing pricing, Zoho plan limits, and Chargebee pricing.

Platform charges only. Chargebee column uses the less expensive of 0.80% of volume, or $99 plus 0.65%. Those two options are equal at $66,000/month. *A sustained $83,000/month run rate is $996,000/year, approaching Zoho Premium's $1M annual billed-amount limit; actual tier eligibility depends on your billed amount, not simply one month's run rate. Excludes processing, taxes, add-ons, and implementation.

Where is the crossover? Against Chargebee Flow PAYG at 0.80%, Zoho Premium matches at $9,875/month of invoicing volume if you choose annual billing ($79 / 0.008), or at $12,500/month with monthly billing ($100 / 0.008). Above those points, Zoho's published Premium subscription is cheaper on platform fees alone, until plan limits or required add-ons change the calculation. Run your numbers.

Where Chargebee Genuinely Wins

We implement Zoho products, so our preference is worth disclosing. Chargebee can be the better fit where monetization complexity and the broader revenue operations stack dominate the decision.

Usage-based and hybrid billing at scale

Chargebee Flow includes usage ingestion, real-time limits and alerts, and tools for hybrid subscription and consumption billing. The published Flow offering includes 100 million usage events per month, with additional enterprise-scale capabilities available. If your billing depends on rapidly changing usage, credits, or complex contracts, evaluate the metering model and event volumes in a live proof of concept rather than comparing prices alone.

Dedicated revenue operations products

Chargebee offers a dedicated CPQ product, including a CPQ Lite entry offer with the first 50 quotes free for existing Chargebee Billing customers, plus paid CPQ capabilities for multi-product, multi-year and ramped quotes. Chargebee RevRec is a separate revenue recognition product. Both may suit more complex teams, but their costs should not be assumed to be included in the Flow billing-platform rate.

Enterprise contracts and account structures

Chargebee Enterprise targets multi-entity billing, account hierarchies, contract terms and high-volume billing events. Those requirements justify a custom proposal and a capabilities workshop. Zoho also has an Enterprise edition, so neither product should be excluded solely because annual billings exceed $1 million.

Lower platform cost at very low invoicing volumes

With Flow PAYG's $0 monthly base fee and 0.80% invoicing-volume charge, a business invoicing $5,000/month pays approximately $40/month in platform fees. That undercuts Zoho Premium at $79 with annual billing. It is not a free plan: the 0.80% charge starts on invoicing volume from the first dollar. The older $250,000 free Starter allowance is retired.

Where Zoho Billing Wins

Predictable subscription pricing within Premium's limits

On Premium, invoicing more does not automatically add a percentage-of-invoicing platform charge while you remain within the plan's published limits. For a business with steady subscription flows and $50,000/month in billed volume, the published $79 annually billed Premium equivalent can be materially less than Chargebee's $400 Flow PAYG rate. Add-on users, payment processing, and implementation remain separate considerations.

Native integrations with Zoho Books and other Zoho apps

Zoho Billing connects to Zoho Books through supported two-way data synchronization for customer and transaction records. This can reduce duplicate entry and simplify accounting handoffs if your business already uses Zoho Books, CRM or Analytics. It is an integration with synchronization, not a guarantee that separate applications share a single record with no mapping or setup. Chargebee also offers accounting and CRM integrations; compare the actual workflows on both sides.

Billing-native CPQ and revenue recognition are available

Zoho now advertises billing-native CPQ functionality covering pricing rules, packaged offers and quote approvals. Its published plan comparison includes two revenue-recognition rules and basic reports on Premium, with custom rules and advanced reporting on Enterprise. Do not assume that every advertised CPQ or ASC 606/IFRS 15 workflow is included in the $79 Premium price: confirm availability and implementation requirements before buying.

One-time invoicing alongside subscriptions

Zoho Subscriptions was renamed Zoho Billing and expanded to handle quotes, one-off invoices, projects and recurring billing. Standard, starting at $39/month billed annually, is aimed at one-time billing. Use Premium, not Standard, when comparing subscription-management costs against Chargebee Flow.

What Switching Actually Involves

A billing platform migration affects renewal dates, payment authorizations and invoices, not just the accounting ledger. The risk is duplicate, missed or incorrect charges. Define a testable cutover plan before comparing implementation quotes.

  • Confirm gateway and payment token portability first Stored payment credentials may be held by a gateway or vault. Keeping the same processor can help, but token portability and mapping depend on the existing vault and both platforms' supported migration methods. A secure token transfer may also be possible when switching processors; customer re-entry is not always necessary.
  • Map active subscriptions and contract exceptions Inventory plan terms, renewal anchors, coupons, grandfathered discounts, prepaid balances, proration, tax treatment and dunning status. Confirm which fields are importable and which require transformation or manual handling.
  • Pick a controlled billing cutover Reconcile outstanding invoices and in-flight renewals around a documented cutover date. Avoid activating two billing engines for the same customer at the same time.
  • Test before charging live customers Use a sandbox or dry-run comparison to verify the next billing cycle, especially credits, proration, usage events and tax. Review invoices and payment retries before switching the old billing jobs off.

At enterprise scale, re-quote both. Zoho Billing Standard and Premium have an annual $1 million billed-amount limit and a 100,000-invoice limit. Zoho Enterprise has no published annual billed-amount cap, but is custom-priced and lists a 0.2% overage on the portion of monthly billed amount exceeding $500,000. Chargebee also offers Enterprise pricing. A straight $79-versus-0.80% comparison no longer covers that decision.

  • You have complex account hierarchies or enterprise contract structures
  • Side-by-side testing shows a better fit for your current payment and CRM stack

Common Questions

Is Zoho Billing cheaper than Chargebee?

It can be. Zoho Premium is $79/month billed annually or $100/month billed monthly. Chargebee Flow is $0 plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99 plus 0.65%. Against Flow PAYG, their break-even volumes are $9,875/month (Zoho annually billed) and $12,500/month (Zoho monthly billed). Feature needs and add-ons can change the result.

Does Zoho Billing have a $1 million revenue cap?

Standard and Premium have a $1 million annual billed-amount limit and 100,000 invoices/year. Enterprise has no published annual billed-amount cap; it requires a custom quote and lists a 0.2% overage on monthly billed amounts above $500,000.

Does Chargebee still have a free plan?

Not as a general billing-platform plan. The former $250,000 cumulative-billing free Starter allowance was replaced by Flow. Flow PAYG has a $0 base fee but charges 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume. The first 50 quotes in CPQ Lite are a separate offer for existing billing customers, not free Chargebee Billing.

Does Zoho Billing support CPQ and revenue recognition?

Yes. Zoho advertises billing-native CPQ. Its plan comparison lists two revenue-recognition rules and basic reports on Premium, with custom rules and advanced reports on Enterprise. Verify the specific CPQ and compliance features you need before contracting.

Is Zoho Billing the same as Zoho Subscriptions?

Yes. Zoho Subscriptions was renamed Zoho Billing and expanded to include quotes and one-off invoicing alongside subscriptions. Standard is geared toward one-time billing; Premium includes recurring subscription management.

Do both charge payment-processing fees?

Payment gateway or processor costs sit on top of the platform examples shown here. Rates depend on provider, location and payment method, so do not assume a universal card fee.
