8 Chargebee Alternatives

Compared on pricing model rather than headline price, with the exact billing volumes where flat fees overtake percentage-of-revenue.

The Short Answer

Almost everyone searching this phrase is leaving for the same reason: percentage-of-revenue pricing. Chargebee takes roughly 0.75 to 0.80 percent of billing value, so your billing cost rises every time revenue rises, for work that does not get any harder. Billing $200,000 a month costs around $1,600 for exactly the same orchestration that costs $160 at $20,000.

The fix is a flat fee, and the only question is where the crossover sits for you:

  • Above about $10,000 a month in billings, Zoho Billing's flat fee of around $79 beats Chargebee's 0.80 percent.
  • Above about $75,000 a month, Maxio's flat $599 beats it too.
  • Below about $10,000 a month, percentage pricing genuinely is cheaper and Chargebee's free tier may cover you entirely.

One warning before you compare anything: Paddle's 5 percent is not comparable to Chargebee's 0.8 percent. Paddle is a merchant of record and that rate includes payment processing and tax compliance. Chargebee's does not. More on that below.

The Distinction That Breaks Most Comparisons

Before any pricing table makes sense, these platforms split into two categories that do genuinely different jobs.

Billing engines

Chargebee, Recurly, Stripe Billing, Maxio, Zoho Billing, Zuora, Lago

  • Handle subscription orchestration, dunning, proration, invoicing
  • You still pay a payment processor, typically 2.9% + $0.30
  • You own sales tax and VAT compliance
  • You are the merchant on record for chargebacks

Merchants of record

Paddle, Lemon Squeezy

  • Handle orchestration and sell as the legal merchant
  • Payment processing included in the rate
  • Tax and VAT compliance is theirs, not yours
  • Fraud and chargebacks are theirs too

So the honest comparison is not 5% against 0.8%. It is 5% against 0.8% plus 2.9% plus 30 cents plus whatever you spend on tax compliance. Once you add those, the two models land much closer together than the headline rates suggest, and for a business selling internationally the merchant-of-record option can be cheaper outright. Model your own case.

The Eight Alternatives

Lowest fixed cost, with a volume ceiling

Zoho Billing

Free plan, then ~$39 Standard / ~$79 Premium per month

The cheapest named flat price in the category and no transaction fees at all, which is the direct answer to percentage pricing. At around $79 a month it beats Chargebee's 0.80 percent from roughly $10,000 in monthly billings upward, and the gap widens from there.

The ceiling is real and we would rather state it than have you find it: these tiers cap around $1 million in annual billed amount. Past that you are on Enterprise pricing and the comparison reopens.

Where it wins

  • Flat fee with no percentage of billing value
  • Cheapest named price here by a wide margin
  • Beats Chargebee's rate from roughly $10K/mo billings
  • Connects natively to Zoho Books, CRM and Analytics
  • Genuine free plan to start

Where it falls short

  • Caps around $1M annual billed amount
  • No CPQ or revenue recognition to match Chargebee's add-ons
  • Standard limits you to around 3 users
  • Weaker for complex usage-based metering
  • Little reason to choose it outside the Zoho ecosystem
Best flat fee at real scale

Maxio

Grow $599/mo up to $100,000 monthly billings

Formed from the Chargify and SaaSOptics merger, and the clearest escape from percentage pricing at volume. A flat $599 that does not move as revenue grows below the cap, with unlimited users included. The crossover maths is published: it beats Chargebee's 0.80 percent around $75,000 in monthly billings and Stripe Billing's 0.7 percent around $86,000.

Where it wins

  • Flat fee up to $100K monthly billings
  • Unlimited users at no extra charge
  • Revenue recognition and SaaS analytics included
  • Published entry price, unusual in this category

Where it falls short

  • $599 is expensive below roughly $75K monthly billings
  • Overage applies above the cap
  • Aimed at B2B SaaS, less suited to consumer subscriptions
Best if you already process through Stripe

Stripe Billing

0.5–0.7% of billing volume, on top of processing fees

Lower percentage than Chargebee and no separate vendor relationship if Stripe already handles your payments. Read the rate carefully though: the billing percentage sits on top of the usual 2.9 percent plus 30 cents, not instead of it.

Where it wins

  • Lower percentage than Chargebee
  • No second vendor if you are already on Stripe
  • Best developer experience in the category
  • Cheapest option at genuinely small scale

Where it falls short

  • Still percentage-based, so the same problem at scale
  • Percentage is additional to processing fees
  • Needs engineering resource to use properly
  • Thinner finance tooling than Chargebee or Maxio
Best if international tax compliance is the real cost

Paddle

5% + $0.50 per transaction, all-inclusive

Looks expensive next to 0.8 percent and frequently is not, because it is a different product. As merchant of record Paddle handles payment processing, global sales tax and VAT registration and filing, fraud and chargebacks. If you sell software internationally and have been quoted for VAT compliance, compare that quote against the difference here before dismissing it.

Where it wins

  • Global tax compliance becomes someone else's problem
  • No monthly platform fee at all
  • Payment processing included in the rate
  • Fraud and chargebacks handled for you

Where it falls short

  • 5% is genuinely expensive at high volume
  • Less control over checkout and customer relationship
  • Payouts on their schedule, not yours
  • Mainly suited to digital products and SaaS
Best for consumer and media subscriptions

Recurly

From $249/mo + 0.9% of billing volume, first ~$40K/mo free

Strong on dunning and churn recovery, which is where consumer subscription businesses actually lose money. The free volume floor softens the percentage at smaller scale, but note the rate above it is higher than Chargebee's.

Where it wins

  • Best dunning and involuntary churn recovery
  • First ~$40K monthly billing volume free of percentage
  • Strong revenue recognition tooling

Where it falls short

  • Platform fee and percentage, unlike Chargebee PAYG
  • 0.9% is above Chargebee's rate
  • All-Access tier needs a $1M volume minimum
Best open-source option

Lago

Open source, no platform fees

The structural answer if percentage pricing is an objection in principle rather than a budget line. Open-source metering and billing with no platform fee, aimed at usage-based models. You are trading licence cost for engineering ownership.

Where it wins

  • No percentage and no platform fee
  • Strong usage-based metering
  • Self-hostable, full control

Where it falls short

  • You own hosting, upgrades and support
  • Needs real engineering capacity
  • Smaller ecosystem than the commercial options
Best for enterprise complexity

Zuora

Enterprise, commonly $20,000+ per year

Included because some Chargebee evaluations are really upgrade evaluations. Zuora handles contract complexity, enterprise revenue recognition and quote-to-cash at a scale the rest of this list does not, at a price to match.

Where it wins

  • Deepest enterprise quote-to-cash capability
  • Strong contract and amendment handling
  • Built for complex revenue recognition

Where it falls short

  • Far more expensive than anything else here
  • Implementation is a substantial project
  • Overkill for most businesses leaving Chargebee
Right answer below about $10K a month

Stay on Chargebee, or move to its free tier

Free to ~$250K cumulative billing, then ~0.75–0.80%

Percentage pricing is not inherently bad, it is bad at volume. Below roughly $10,000 a month in billings, 0.80 percent is about $80, which undercuts every flat fee on this page. Chargebee's free tier covering up to around $250,000 in cumulative billing is also genuinely useful for an early-stage business.

If you are below the crossover, migrating your billing system to save nothing would be a poor trade. Billing migrations carry more risk than most software moves, because the failure mode is charging customers incorrectly.

Where it wins

  • Cheapest option below roughly $10K monthly billings
  • Free tier to around $250K cumulative billing
  • No migration risk to your revenue collection
  • Strong CPQ and revenue recognition add-ons

Where it falls short

  • Cost scales with revenue indefinitely
  • Add-ons price separately and add up
  • Published pricing is genuinely hard to pin down

Where the Crossover Sits

Monthly billings Chargebee @ 0.80% Zoho Billing flat Maxio flat
$5,000$40~$79$599
$10,000$80~$79$599
$50,000$400~$79$599
$75,000$600~$79$599
$200,000$1,600Over tier cap$599
$500,000$4,000Enterprise quote$599 + overage

Billing platform fee only. Excludes payment processing, which applies to every row here. Zoho Billing tiers cap around $1M in annual billed amount; Maxio Grow caps at $100K monthly billings with overage above. Chargebee's pay-as-you-go rate used as the stable anchor since its tier pricing varies between sources.

That table is the whole decision. Find your monthly billing volume, read across. Everything else on this page is detail. And if you are in the middle rows, note that Zoho Billing at around $79 is doing the same orchestration Chargebee charges $400 to $600 for, right up until the volume cap.

What Switching Actually Involves

Billing is the highest-risk system to migrate on this entire site, because the failure mode is charging customers the wrong amount. Treat it accordingly.

  • Payment tokens are the hard part Stored card details live with your gateway, not your billing platform. Moving platforms while keeping the same gateway is far easier than changing both. If you must change gateway, ask both providers about token portability before anything else, because the alternative is asking every customer to re-enter their card.
  • Mid-cycle subscriptions need a cutover plan Customers partway through a billing period, on proration, or on legacy pricing all need deliberate handling. Pick a cutover at a period boundary and let in-flight cycles complete where they started.
  • Run both in parallel and reconcile For at least one full billing cycle, compare what each system would charge before switching off the old one. This is the step that catches proration and discount errors before your customers do.
  • Grandfathered pricing rarely imports cleanly Legacy plans, bespoke discounts and one-off arrangements accumulate in any billing system. Inventory them early, because they are usually rebuilt by hand.

How to Actually Choose

Start from your billing volume

  • Under ~$10K/mo → stay on Chargebee
  • $10K to $100K/mo → Zoho Billing
  • Over ~$75K/mo, B2B SaaS → Maxio
  • Already on Stripe, small scale → Stripe Billing
  • Selling internationally → Paddle
  • Consumer subscriptions, churn focus → Recurly
  • Engineering capacity, usage-based → Lago
  • Enterprise quote-to-cash → Zuora

Then check these

  • Separate the billing fee from processing fees in every quote
  • Ask what tax compliance costs you today
  • Confirm volume caps and overage rates
  • Check gateway token portability before committing
  • Count your grandfathered pricing arrangements

Common Questions

What is the best Chargebee alternative?

Zoho Billing between roughly $10,000 and $100,000 in monthly billings, Maxio above about $75,000 for B2B SaaS, Paddle if international tax compliance is your real cost.

Why do companies leave Chargebee?

Percentage-of-revenue pricing. The cost grows with revenue for orchestration work that does not get harder.

Is Paddle's 5% expensive?

Not necessarily. It includes payment processing and global tax compliance, which the 0.8 percent platforms do not. Compare like with like.

Should we just stay?

Below roughly $10,000 a month in billings, yes. Billing migrations carry real risk and the saving at that volume is negative.

Find Your Crossover Before You Move

Send us your monthly billing volume, what you pay in processing fees, and whether you handle VAT or sales tax in multiple jurisdictions. We will work out where you sit on that table. If you are below the crossover we will tell you to stay, because migrating a billing system to save nothing is the worst trade on this page.
