Attribute-Based Product Configuration
How a furniture retailer gave reps an attribute-based product configurator in Zoho CRM that feeds directly into centralized sales order entry.
Client details generalized to protect confidentiality.
Retailers or manufacturers selling configurable products where reps build specifications from option lists by hand.
The Challenge
Custom furniture was specified by reps writing out combinations of frame, fabric, finish, and dimensions. Invalid combinations were caught in production rather than at the point of sale, which meant reworking an order after the customer had signed. Pricing depended on which options were chosen, calculated manually, and the specification was then re-entered into order entry by an administrator who could not verify it.
The Solution
Attribute-Based Configuration
Products are built from defined attributes rather than free text, so a specification is structured from the start.
- Attribute sets per product family
- Option lists per attribute
- Dependent options driven by selection
- Configuration stored on the quote
Validity Enforcement
Invalid combinations are prevented at configuration rather than caught in production.
- Compatibility rules between attributes
- Invalid options hidden or blocked
- Validation message explaining the conflict
- Rule maintenance without development
Configured Pricing
Price derives from the selected attributes, so quoting is consistent across the sales floor.
- Price components per attribute option
- Rollup to configured line price
- Margin visibility on the quote
- Discount authority by role
Feed Into Centralized Order Entry
The configuration flows into sales order entry without re-specification.
- Configuration carried to the sales order
- Attributes visible on the order
- Production specification derived
- No manual re-entry step

Under the Hood Technical detail
- Attributes as Data
- Attribute sets, options, and compatibility rules are data rather than code, so the merchandising team maintains them. A configurator that requires development for every new fabric is abandoned within two seasons.
- Validity at Entry
- Compatibility is enforced during configuration rather than validated on save, because the rep needs to know while the customer is in front of them. Post-hoc validation moves the problem rather than solving it.
- Pricing Composition
- Price is composed from attribute components rather than looked up per finished combination. A combination-level price table for a configurable product grows past maintainability immediately.
- Order Handoff
- Configuration carries to the order rather than being re-specified, which eliminated the administrator transcription step and the errors it introduced. The production specification derives from the same attributes.
- Notable Constraint
- Genuinely bespoke pieces fall outside the attribute model. A custom line type exists with manual pricing and a required note, so true one-offs do not force reps to misuse the configurator to describe them.
The Results
- Invalid combinations are prevented at quoting rather than found in production.
- Configured pricing is consistent across the sales floor.
- Specifications reach order entry without being retyped.
